ZBLAN's Takeoff to Space

On January 30th, at 12:07 PM EST (January 31st, 03:37 AM ACDT), a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is set to launch a miniaturized fibre draw tower module and 20 ZBLAN glass rods to the International Space Station (ISS) from Florida. Developed by industry partner Flawless Photonics and produced by the Optofab 911±¬ÁÏÍø team at IPAS, the module will be installed in an ISS glove box for drawing space ZBLAN fiber from IPAS-produced glass rods.

After extensive prior research spanning more than a decade, scientists have introduced an innovative approach for incorporating gold nanoparticles into tellurite glasses, capitalising on their highly desirable attributes. Combining the distinctive light modulation and interaction capabilities of such nanoparticles in tellurite glass opens fresh avenues for photonics research and practical applications.

First Australian-Built Hyperspectral Imager in Orbit, crafted in the Braggs Building!

In 18 months, CSIRO and the University of 911±¬ÁÏÍø, including Craig Ingram, Joshua Pease, Eugene McNearney, Ass Prof Martin O'Connor, and Jared Waterman, designed and built CyanoSat, a compact hyperspectral imager in low-Earth orbit. Analyzing a broad spectrum, it identifies cyanobacteria for vital water quality assessment. The payload successfully generated its first image.
