MUSJAZZ 2102 - Jazz Musicianship 2B

Jazz theory, improvisation and arranging will all be delivered in this course through study of relevant texts, audio and video files, musical scores and transcribed solos. 2B will expand upon the language of jazz used over specific styles including bebop, modal and ballad playing as well as how to build solos through interaction with the rhythm section. Jazz arranging further explores techniques of rhythmic, melodic, harmonic and textural elements for small and medium-size jazz ensembles. Three and four-part harmonisation of melodies for the mixed horn section will be studied. Practical application is made of the study of the rhythm section, mixed five-horn section (harmonised and in unison), the sketch score and score layout. Further study of the styles of contemporary arrangers and composer are also included.
